This is set in the late 15th century (1480s I think, can't remember exactly) when? Catholicism really was the only Christian religion in Western Europe. The East had the Orthodox church, and Protestantism and its branches were really only whispers at the time.
As for the Golden Compass, it's really more of an anti-Christian film. I don't want to ruin anything for you, but the books are brilliant (never watched the movie).

I think one of the reasons is may have been unpopular was because parents didn't want their children watching it.? You've got to admit, it's a hell of a lot darker than the other Disney films, and even if that makes it even better, it still puts some people off ease.

I think it's because kids don't understand it fully and thus don't really like it, and parents do understand and are uneasy about the kids watching it. It's not a kids' movie at all, but its classification as such means lots of people wouldn't want to watch it once they're old enough to understand. When I watched it again? as an adult, "Hellfire" genuinely shocked me. It's one thing for Disney villains to sing about murder and world domination, quite another for them to sing about THAT.

To be honest I kind of like the historical accuracy it portrays. This is set in the late 15th century (1480s I think, can't remember exactly) when? Catholicism really was the only Christian religion in Western Europe. The East had the Orthodox church, and Protestantism and its branches were really only whispers at the time. As for the Golden Compass, it's really more of an anti-Christian film. I don't want to ruin anything for you, but the books are brilliant (never watched the movie).

It sounds ridiculous maybe but this song made me cry...it's so beautiful. I'm really struggling at the moment and this just makes me feel....better, somehow. It reminds me that (in my opinion at least) everyone is a child of God, and he will help all of us, even if we don't see it. It also reminds me that I'm not alone. no just pointing out the fact that religion can still dictate? hollywood & entertainment when they should just let it be entertainment and art. This movie still is one of my favourite films from my childhood and I feel as many do that this movie doesn't get the attention it deserves and I think this is why. I guess I shouldn't have singled out the catholics even though this is set in Notre Dame. The other movie I was referring to was the Golden Compass that came out in 2007.

I was 9 when I first saw this and I understood the alot (not everything but enough) I personally think it was certain adults who had a problem with this movie for the same reasons you listed. Also the same reason why the sequels to the Golden Compass got canned from being turned into movies. The catholic church once again stuck its nose in and interfered? with hollywood.
