The classic 8-minute war of Hagler and Hearns.
One of the best fights of all time.
Probably the most exciting middleweight title fight the last 30 years.

Tommy had problems ... By: joeygonzo. on 19 May 12, 07:38:47 Tommy had problems backing up though.
Barkley proved that.
So, so long? as Hags was backing him up, Hags had a better chance of not getting nailed with Tommy's huge right.
If Tommy backed you up, you were toast most of the time.
HE did that to Cuevas and Duran and whacked them with that vaunted right.
I think Tommy's fists were just too small for his size. He broke that right hand often. Broke it on top of Benitez's head too.

Tommy was on a roll after losing to Leonard.
Hagler beat the snot out of Hamsho before this fight.
Maybe not in their prime but not much past it.
Hagler took a long layoff after this fight then had? a tough fight with Mugabi.
That one took a lot out of Hagler I think.

Hearns & Hagler ... By: matelot108. on 29 Apr 12, 23:19:51 Hearns & Hagler were both great fighters; however, Hagler was clearly much better. The only chance Hearns stood of? winning this fight was from Hagler bleeding too much. A fine fight, but not the classic it is reckoned to be. Many greater title fights have taken place at many weights before & since.

Had it not been for that, the fight? may have been a bit more interesting. If you look at some of his other fights, you'll see Hearns had no problems going to the later rounds.

# Pryor held ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 12 Apr 12, 10:21:37 4.
# Pryor held one version of the 140lbs title between 1980-83. Going off Ring Magazine's Annual Rankings for those? years, Pryor never fought either the No.1 or 2 ranked fighters in the division.
# Pryor never unified the 140lbs titles.
# After winning the title, he fought a nobody called Danny Myers in a non-title fight then defended against against Gaeten Hart (44-20-4). Not exactly Hall of Fame stuff is it. SRL's equivalent fights were Green (33-2-0) and Duran (71-1-0) both title fights.
3.
Most champions ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 12 Apr 12, 10:19:47 3.
Most champions take an easier fight after having a really big one where possible and they don't come any bigger than SRL vs Hearns.? Pryor fought Arguello then he took an easy fight against Sang-Hyun Kim then fought Arguello again. Why was Pryor allowed to but SRL wasn't?
Everyone seems to become a hypocrite when they start talking about SRL.
.
I'll state it again - Pryor did not deserve a shot at thbe 147lbs title because;
2.
From winning ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 12 Apr 12, 10:18:26 2.
From winning the title until his (1st) retirement SRL, by contrast, had more 'superfights' than traditional defences. His previous 2 fights were Kalule (36-0-0) for the light middle title? and Hearns (32-0-0) for the undisputed welterweight crown - and you begrudge SRL taking a straightforward defence against Finch after that?
Nobody in the history of the sport has fought stiffer opposition in such as short period of time as SRL did between Benitez and Finch in the early 80s.
1.
'Bruce Finch ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 12 Apr 12, 10:17:51 1.
'Bruce Finch got a shot at Leonard after Hearns. Nobody knew who he was"
He was the No 6 ranked welterweight by Ring Magazine. The Finch fight was a voluntary defence? against a competent but not a great fighter. For most champions these kind of fights make up the majority of their defences and perhaps once or twice in their career they might have a 'superfight' against outstanding opposition. All Pryors defences were the former except for the Arguello fights which were the latter.
"Leonard got a shot ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 12 Apr 12, 08:01:33 "Leonard got a shot at Hagler after never having fought at 160 .."
Yes he did but he didn't deserve the shot at Hagler on the basis of his recent form. It was a voluntary defence and Hagler fought SRL for the same reason that Pryor wanted to - money. A fight against SRL was the most lucrative that either of them could hope to get.
Pryor had a chip? on his shoulder because he wasn't earning as much as SRL and Hearns. That was unfortunate but SRL didn't have an obligation to make Pryor rich.
Leonard got a shot ... By: joeygonzo. on 12 Apr 12, 04:31:06 Leonard got a shot at Hagler after never having fought at 160 and was retired for years.
WBC as in We Be Corrupt always accommodated big names not deserving a title shot.
Bruce Finch got a shot at Leonard after Hearns.
Nobody knew who he was.
Again. not saying Pryor would have beat Leonard.
But, Pryor not a box-office draw was not the? reason Leonard did not fight Pryor.
"That should answer ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 11 Apr 12, 23:21:30 "That should answer your first question" Not really (of course I've seen the video already) it's one incident. It's the "numerous attempts" I need convincing of.
The other question is -? why did Pryor deserve a shot at the title at this point? When you have never fought at 147lbs, you're not undisputed champ in your own division and you haven't fought against any really big name fighters; - should simply saying that you want to fight SRL get you a welterweight world title shot?
I wouldn't put too ... By: preo2. on 11 Apr 12, 21:51:03 I wouldn't put too much stock into Pryor beating Hearns as a 17 year old amateur. I doubt if he would have beaten Tommy? this easily as a Pro. Henry Tillman beat Tyson twice as amateurs but was destroyed by Mike as a Pro. Aaron was a great fighter though, and yes Leonard did duck him, and he admitted it.
For video just type ... By: markywestside. on 11 Apr 12, 21:37:27 For video just type in Aaron Pryor Sugar Ray Leonard. That should answer your first question. But also their is no doubt that the Duran and Hearns fights were spectacular and highly anticipated, but Pryor was far from being a unknown. Pryor was a bad matchup for SRL and Sugar Ray Leonard knew it too.
Yea and? when Pryor fought and lost to Bobby Young he had eye problems and shouldn't even have been liscensed to fight. He also had 3 fights after that above 140 with 3 wins with 2 KO'S and 1 TKO.
Leonard and Hearns ... By: rocky7777ize. on 10 Apr 12, 01:31:30 Leonard and Hearns wanted no part of Aaron Pryor. They knew? what he was capable of.
Hearns prime weight ... By: moloko76. on 06 Apr 12, 00:20:35 Hearns prime weight was 154 lb he was perfect at 154? and outclassed 2 all time greats at that weight in Duran and Benitez. No doubt the best 154 pounder in history, mccallum and norris a close 2nd.
I don't? want to be ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 03 Apr 12, 07:35:30 I don't? want to be seen to be knocking Pryor here because he was a great fighter. I'm more defending SRL's actions than anything.
I understand what ... By: TheSmithDorian. on 03 Apr 12, 07:00:48 I understand what you're saying but I still have to ask - why did Pryor deserve a shot at the title. Finch was ranked #6 in the world at 147lbs - Pryor wasn't ranked. There's no shame with Finch getting KO'd by Hearns - who was one of the top 5 welters? ever - ask Duran. Finch was probably as good as most of the guys that Pryor fought.
But the main point is that SRL didn't know when he fought Finch that it'd be his last fight at 147lbs or that it would be the last chance to fight Pryor.
I don't really want ... By: joeygonzo. on 02 Apr 12, 23:23:24 I don't really want to argue Leonard ducked Pryor but some points here.
Leonard did not need a huge name to sell a fight really.
If Pryor was the opponent, it would have sold easy. Again, much easier sell than? against Bruce Finch who was knocked out by Tommy before. So in 1982, really Leonard could have picked Pryor. He didn't and Pryor being a big name had nothing to do with it.
This was a pivotal period in Pac's LIFE. Had he lost to EM in their rematch, he would have probably gone downhill.
Instead he beat Morales in a shocking KO and went from there.
